You have probably given and received many gifts this Christmas. Which gift do you cherish most? Hopefully, that’s the wrong question.
Instead, I should have asked, “Which person did you most enjoy spending time with this past Christmas season?” There are very few “things” that can bring us lasting joy, but God has given us family, friends and a spouse to deliver His love to us. And when we enjoy time with them, we are enjoying time with God.
During this last year, were there times that you felt especially close to God and your spouse? What can you do to have more of those times? You don’t have to spend lots of money to recreate wonderful times. You just have to be a little more creative with the resources God has given you.
You can also create an environment that gives you more opportunities to get closer to your spouse and to God. When was the last time you just snuggled together on the couch or overstuffed chair? How about helping out with some of the chores that your spouse normally does? Could you take a walk or drive together and spend the time talking about each other’s dreams (not your time schedule)? Do you express your thanks for the little (even expected) things that your spouse does?
Do you encourage your spouse in their hobbies and career? Do you encourage them to grow in their abilities and skills? Whatever form this takes, fostering and supporting growth both individually and as a couple is a great sign that you are on the right track.
Psychologists tell us that it takes about 27 days of consistently doing something new for it to become a habit. So, commit to doing more with your spouse during the next month and you will then be ready for a great Valentines celebration.
Blessings,
