Dear Abby

My favorite female Bible character is Abigail. For her story, check out 1 Samuel 25. You’ll see that she is a beautiful, bright woman married to a rude, crude fool. Sounds like a perfect storm, right?

In reality, her wisdom calmed a storm that not only would have destroyed her household, but also would have besmirched David’s reign even before he was on the throne. She identifies the crisis, takes matters into her own hands, mobilizes resources to solve the problem, and tactfully defuses David’s childish rage, all before lunch.

Dear Abby, how did you do it? By embodying the spirit of the Proverbs 31 woman, whose creativity nurtures those in her household and community. She saves money, purchases real estate, shrewdly uses the market place, and creates a new profit center by planting a vineyard.

Creativity is the facet of wisdom most needed and most clearly seen as things change. It begins in God, but flows through you:

God’s infinite creativity is shown all around us. Psalm 19:1-6
God’s creative image is reflected in you. Genesis 1:27
God’s love of diversity is visible in your gifts. Rom. 12:3-8
God’s sovereignty over your gifts is His right. Exodus 4:11, 12
God’s ability to inspire excellence in you is real. Exodus 31:1-6
God’s own creativity can be displayed in your weakness. 2 Cor. 12:9
God’s crisis-conquering wisdom is available when you ask. James 1:5
God’s Spirit creatively aligns your prayers with His will. Rom. 8:26, 27

Change can intimidate, but as God’s child, you can adapt. You might print out these eight Scriptures and allow them to spark your own creativity in the weeks to come. You need not write Dear Abby.

“Father, we know you have created us for such a time as this. Help us embrace the days ahead with hearts full of your vision.
In the name of Jesus. Amen.”
