Enough

It’s two syllables, easy to say, hard to comprehend, nearly impossible to experience. What is it, this enough? What is enough? Is there ever enough?

The Bible is realistic about our senses, our perceived needs and experiences. Solomon tells us, “The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing,” (Ecclesiastes 1:8). And the prophet warns the rebels, “You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes” (Haggai 1:6).

Is there a solution to this frustration, this endless wanting and never having enough? Yes. The principle is in Proverbs 13:25:
“The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite,
But the stomach of the wicked is in want.”

It all depends upon what it is we want, doesn’t it? And if those things are righteous things, and good things, and God’s things, well, yes, we can have enough and more than enough.

Maybe that’s what Jesus was getting at when He said (Matthew 5:6),
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness,
For they shall be filled.”

And, “He who comes to me will never hunger; he who believes in me will never thirst.”
John 6:35
