God: Fantasy or Fortress?

People of faith often are characterized by outsiders as being weak, and needing outside support of an “invisible friend” to shield them from the realities of life. The story is that faith is a sign of weakness.

“Religion is just a crutch for the weak.”
“God is a fairy tale character for those who need one.”
“Hoping in heaven is an excuse for not living in the now.”
“Those people cling to their religion rather than face the facts.”

The Bible often commends our taking refuge in God. . .
“Blessed are all who take refuge in Him.” Psalm 2:12
“Let all who take refuge in you rejoice.” Psalm 5:11
“He is a shield for all who take refuge in him.” Psalm 18:30
“None who take refuge in him will be condemned.” Psalm 34:22
“My mighty rock, my refuge is God.” Psalm 62:7
“Under his wings you will find refuge.” Psalm 91:4

Do those sound like signs of weakness, or wisdom?
Those who take refuge in God. . .
— Acknowledge their status as creatures.
— Admit they are in a battle.
— Know they are outflanked and outnumbered.
— Realize their own health and resources eventually will fail.
— Want to be on the winning side.
— Live to fight another day.

Fleeing to God, far from a sign of weakness, is the only sane thing to do in a fallen world. In the end, it is those who DON’T take seek protection from God who get into trouble.

Refusing refuge in God, they. . .
— Deny the clear evidence of a Creator. Romans 1:19, 20
— Trust in their own riches. Psalm 52:7
— Trust in other humans. Psalm 118:8
— Trust in princes (government). Psalm 119:9
— Trust in deception (lies). Isaiah 28:15
— Trust foreign mercenary armies. Isaiah 30:2

We all take shelter somewhere and trust someone, the only questions are where and whom. Today, people can claim anything about those of us who have trusted in our Heavenly Father and His Savior-Son. But one day they will be the ones whose choices will mock them.

For our part, we are assured (Psalm 25:3) that. . .
“No one whose hope is in (God) will ever be put to shame.”
Ever.
Who is your refuge?

“Father, we thank you that you not only are a present help in time of trouble, but you invite everyone into your care and protection. May they take refuge in your loving Son, Jesus, while there is still time. Amen.”
