God’s Greatness in Defeating Our Foes

We’ve seen that our God is worthy of worship because nothing can stop Him, and because He is able to turn even the worst of things into good for His people.

But what about those who are evil themselves? What of those who have raped, robbed, and pillaged their way through life without regard for their fellow man? What of those who purposely seek to do harm to God by attempting to destroy His people?

We must be careful here, since Jesus teaches us to pray for our enemies because God Himself sends rain on both the just and the unjust (Matthew 5:43-48). Even we ourselves once were enemies of God whom He has now turned into family (Ephesians 2:1-5).

But what of those who never come to Him? What of the forever unrepentant? And what of those people who delight in doing evil to others, thinking only of benefiting themselves?

Broadly stated, just as God turns curses into blessings for His people, He also turns curses back upon those who make them:
“Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and a stone will come back on him who starts it rolling. Proverbs 26, 27
“The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug;
their feet are caught in the net they have hidden.” Psalm 9:15

This is why God can laugh mockingly at the rebellion of mankind (Psalm 2). God is working behind the scenes in ways we can not even imagine to make evil turn on itself and collapse into itself.

Haman is hung on the very gallows he wickedly had built for the righteous Modecai (Esther 7:10). Those who plotted to have Daniel thrown to the lions meet the fate they planned for him (Daniel 6:24).

Satan’s greatest victory, the death of Jesus upon the Cross, becomes the very means of his defeat. Killing Jesus sets the scene for the Resurrection of Jesus and all His people, sealing the doom of death itself, God’s (and our) last enemy. 1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 54-57

This is why we never seek vengeance. We are to leave such judgment to God, knowing that just as He is perfect in Love, He, too is perfect in Justice. Is He, the Lord God Almighty, not worthy of our worship?

“Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written, ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”
Romans 12:19
