Higher Ways

How many tasks can you handle at once?

One?

Two?

Maybe three?

What about God?  Hmmm … let’s see what He is capable of ….

The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof,[a]
    the world and those who dwell therein,
for he has founded it upon the seas
    and established it upon the rivers. – Psalm 24:1-2

To whom then will you liken God,
    or what likeness compare with him?
19 An idol! A craftsman casts it,
    and a goldsmith overlays it with gold
    and casts for it silver chains.
20 He who is too impoverished for an offering
    chooses wood[h] that will not rot;
he seeks out a skillful craftsman
    to set up an idol that will not move.

21 Do you not know? Do you not hear?
    Has it not been told you from the beginning?
    Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22 It is he who sits above the circle of the earth,
    and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers;
who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,
    and spreads them like a tent to dwell in;
23 who brings princes to nothing,
    and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness. – Isaiah 40: 18-23

God is in control of all things. He can exercise control over nature. Unlike idols, who are powerless, He has unlimited power. He can set up a ruler, or bring him down. He can hear the prayers of countless people at once. He can simultaneously manage innumerable situations. He can work in the lives of all those He has created. He has oversight over all wildlife, that even a sparrow will not fall to the ground without Him knowing. He can intercede in wars, natural disasters, or the finding of a child’s lost toy. He can watch over you while you drive, or prevent you from choking on a piece of chicken. He can bring you face to face with the person you will marry, or provide money for a bill that seems to come out of nowhere. He can be present everywhere, including in the doctor’s office when you find out that you have cancer. He can heal the cancer. He can bring rain to the drenched flower, or hope to the soul who has none. He can bring forth the cry of a newborn, and meet one of his saints on their deathbed. He can shape our hearts, influence our thoughts, and stir our spirit. He can prompt a driver to look twice before pulling out into traffic, and spare a life. He can direct ants to food, or whales to krill.

He can do all this, and infinitely more, all at once. Every day. For however long He chooses.

His thoughts are higher. His ways are higher.

May I say something to you (and me)?

There is no way that we can ever fully conceive of the greatness of God. We can’t even get close.

So the next time you cuddle up in a chair and start to pray about your unsolvable problems, remember who you are praying to …

Do you not know? Do you not hear?
    Has it not been told you from the beginning?
    Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22 It is he who sits above the circle of the earth …

For Jesus,

Rob
