“I’m sooooo bored!”

Years ago I heard a smart man say, “Life is dull only to the dull.”

There and then I resolved never to bewail boredom. I realized that if I felt bored, it indicated more about me than the task at hand, and that for believers, God always has something for us to do well, even if it is to rest.

So, what should we make of our general listlessness and not knowing what to do with ourselves when suddenly we have time on our hands? What if I feel bored? Let me suggest an exam with a dozen questions, six about rest and six about activity. First, turn off the TV and your phone and sit alone quietly for five minutes. That’s it, five minutes. I dare you. Can’t do it, can you? Let’s go to the exam. . .

Do I ever really rest quietly and without feeling guilty?
Do I require each second to be occupied with work or entertainment?
Do I think God was slacking when He rested on the Seventh Day?
Do I believe God designed and ordained this day just as it is?
Do I allow the Lord, My Shepherd, to lead me beside quiet waters?
Do I know what it is for God to restore my soul?

Am I doing all I do with all my heart, for the Lord? Colossians 3:23
Am I constantly rejoicing, regardless? 1 Thessalonians 5:16
Am I praying “without ceasing”? 1 Thessalonians 5:17
Am I giving thanks in every situation? 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Am I looking for opportunities to be salt and light? Matthew 5:13-16
Am I seeking to share Jesus with those around me? Matthew 9:35-38

Examination over. Still bored?

“Father, grant us wisdom to find and create meaningful activity
and the grace to receive the gift of rest,
all in your time and in your way.
Glorify yourself in us this day, in the name of Jesus. Amen.”
