“Just Following the Science”

It all sounds so simple. On the other hand. . .

What is it to follow the science? For one thing, it requires that an idea (hypothesis) be rigorously tested before it is adopted and applied. Following science is searching for evidence, not lobbying for a theory.

It also means correcting the record with evolving data. We must not be smug. Sixteen centuries elapsed between the Greeks proposing that the earth orbits the sun and Copernicus finally proving it does. One hundred more years passed before it was safe to confess out loud.

The complexity of living organisms should cause us to speak even more humbly of their mysteries. Instead, we may hear constantly shifting data touted by pundits as eternal Truth. Science knows better. We have no reason to doubt the scientific method, but we should be wary of pronouncements that can’t pass the test of critical thinking.

Modern medicine is a blessing from God (Psalm 19). But it is a work in progress, so don’t be dismayed when what we know for certain today is proven wrong tomorrow. We’re just following the science.

“Father, we thank you for doctors, nurses, and other caretakers in these difficult times. We pray your wisdom for the lab workers and researchers, too. May they prosper in your way. In the name of Jesus. Amen.”
