That’s Backwards!

Recently the state of Alabama put forth legislation that will make abortion illegal. One politician in Alabama who opposes the legislation stated, “Alabama is already viewed as a backwards state, this will only make us look more backwards”.   Obviously there is no shortage of opinions on the issue of abortion. What struck me though about the politician’s comment was his use of the word ‘backwards”. It really got me thinking about things that are truly backwards like:

  • It is backwards when people have sex, and then try to build a relationship.
  • It is backwards when people have sex (which of course can lead to pregnancy), and then announce that they are not ready to have a baby.
  • It is backwards when people have sex, which is a deeply personal act, and then say that they have no commitment to one another.
  • It is backwards when people have unprotected sex, and then call the pregnancy an “accident”.
  • It is backwards when people talk about a woman’s right to choose, but no one wants to talk about the choice she (and her mate) had to not do something would create a baby.
  • It is backwards when people say that there is no life at three, six, or now even nine months of pregnancy, when clearly there is life.
  • It is backwards when the most microscopic organism on Mars is called, “life”, but not so for a child in the womb.

I should also mention that I used to think and behave in almost all the ways described above. God has helped me over time to change my view. I am not throwing stones. I am just listing things on a page that are clearly in a backwards order. If you take all of the emotion, personal views, and political grandstanding out of it, this is pretty clear to see.   I wrote this blog because I couldn’t stay silent any more. When I had the term “backwards” applied yet again to anyone who opposed the pro-choice agenda, I just had to clearly state some things that are truly in backwards order.   I think God is pretty clear about when life forms, as announced through king David in Psalm 139:     “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.”     For Him,   Rob
